Lettie and Diana never expected to become parents again. Diana had two grown sons and was enjoying the thought of grandchildren. But when Diana’s biological granddaughter, Elena needed a family they decided to step up. Both Lettie and Diana have stated that the adoption of Elena has brought them closer together and created oneness as a family. Elena is an intelligent, fun loving little girl. She was born premature and was followed closely by the premie unit at Stanford Hospital. Elena has caught up on her height and weight and is reported to be extremely healthy. She calls Lettie and Diana "mom" but distinguishes between the two with different forms of the word. Elena is able to understand both English and Spanish and is learning both. Lettie and Diana agree that Elena’s adoption made life richer for them all.
